Before the Curtain Rises: Preparing for Our Annual Recital

Long before the first dancer steps onto the stage, our annual recital is already taking shape - in the practice room, in a piece of music played once more, and in the many conversations that help turn a year's learning into a shared celebration.

Every year, recital month becomes one of the busiest times at Nrityangan. There is excitement, there are lists, and there is always one more detail to think about. Behind it all is a simple hope: to bring our students together for an annual show that celebrates their work, their growth, and their love of dance.

Here is a little glimpse of the preparations behind our upcoming recital.

From practice to performance

Choreography is only the beginning. Music needs to be selected and prepared. Movements need time to settle. Transitions, spacing, and group formations ask us to think beyond a single step and imagine how the whole performance will unfold.

In class, that means returning to familiar passages with fresh attention. Listening again. Trying again. Finding confidence in the company of the dancers beside us. A recital gives all that practice a direction, while reminding us that the journey matters just as much as the stage.

The photographs from these days hold something we treasure: the warmth between the work. A smile, a group picture, a moment to pause together before everyone returns to the next task. These, too, become part of our recital memories.

The show behind the show

Putting together an annual recital means holding many pieces in mind at once. Alongside choreography and music come costumes, certificates, and trophies—each with its own decisions and details.

Then there is the event itself: renting a suitable space, planning food, arranging the programme, and coordinating guest artist performances. The order of the evening needs thought, as does the work that happens before the audience arrives and after the final bow.

So much of this preparation happens quietly in the background. Someone follows up on a detail. Someone checks a list. Another conversation helps the next piece fall into place. It is this steady coordination that gives our students the space to focus on their dancing.

A little colour before the big day

The soft turquoise fabric and gold trim offer an early glimpse of what is taking shape. Trying on a costume is an exciting moment, but it is also part of the preparation—an opportunity to think about fit, comfort, and how the fabric moves with the dancer.

There is something special about seeing a costume outside the stage lights, in the same room where the practice happens. The performance begins to feel a little closer. What has lived in our imagination starts becoming something we can see.

A celebration we build together

The busiest month also reminds us how much an annual show depends on people. Students bring their effort and enthusiasm. Families make room for the preparations. Everyone helping with the many background tasks contributes to the experience we will share on recital day.

Certificates and trophies will mark moments of achievement, but there is much to celebrate along the way: the patience to repeat, the courage to perform, and the care that goes into supporting one another.

As we continue preparing for our upcoming recital, we are grateful for every part of that collective effort. The curtain has not risen yet, but the story of this year's show is already being written—one practice, one fitting, and one helping hand at a time.
