A Summer Evening in Rhythm: Nrityangan at IACS Night Market

Some stages have curtains. Others open onto a summer sky, with families gathered on the grass and a whole community making room for dance.

At the IACS Night Market 2026 in Bellevue's Crossroads Park, Nrityangan students brought their performance into that shared space. It was a chance to carry Kathak beyond the classroom and offer something of its grace, expression, and spirit to our neighbors.

A gathering of community, culture, and connection

IACS described the Night Market as a celebration of “community, culture, and connection.” Held on June 20 at Crossroads Park, the event brought together food vendors, artisan shopping, local businesses, family activities, and live cultural performances. Its invitation was simple: come together, explore, and enjoy an evening with friends and family.

For Nrityangan, taking part meant adding dance to that conversation. A community gathering gives students a lovely opportunity to share what they have been learning with people who may be discovering Kathak for the first time.

Many dancers, one shared intention

The photographs hold small moments that are easy to miss when a performance is moving: an arm extended toward a fellow dancer, a carefully held pose, the shape of a group coming together. In cream and gold, the students created patterns across the open stage, their individual movements becoming part of a larger picture.

That togetherness matters. Learning to perform as a group means attending to more than one's own steps. It asks for awareness of the dancers beside us, care for the formation, and the patience to keep practicing until everyone can move with confidence.

Another set of photographs brings a vivid change of color: students in red, framed by the same summer light, sharing expressive gestures across the stage. Different moments, different colors, and the same pleasure in bringing dance to a community audience.

Beyond the classroom

A performance is a milestone in a much longer journey. Behind a few minutes on stage are lessons, repetition, encouragement, and the willingness to try again. We celebrate our students for bringing that work into the open, and our families for helping make those opportunities possible.

The wider view of the park tells another part of the story: people gathered close to the stage, making space for the performers within a busy community celebration. This is one of the joys of sharing Kathak locally. The dance becomes part of the places where we meet, spend time together, and make memories.
